CBD credit cards and the One card: the terms behind free for life

Last verified 19 June 2026 · Card terms change; confirm fees and rates directly with CBD

Commercial Bank of Dubai's card range is anchored by the One card, marketed as free for life. The questions that decide its value are what conditions sit behind the no-fee promise, what the rewards actually pay after conditions, and the eligibility bar, all verified against CBD's published terms with dates.

Data notice. Specific CBD card reward rates, earn caps, minimum salary requirements and interest rates are not yet verified in our data files and are marked below. Commercial Bank of Dubai is a mid-sized UAE bank with a long retail history. Its credit card range is not the widest in the market, which is not necessarily a drawback. A focused range means the bank's attention is concentrated on fewer products, and its entry-level One card has been a consistent offer with a clear positioning: no annual fee, no conditions, for life. Whether that positioning survives scrutiny is what a review should test.

The question "CBD One card review, is it really free for life?" appears often in UAE personal finance searches, and for good reason. The UAE credit card market has a history of products that start free and acquire fees over time, through product changes, tier migrations or the quiet addition of conditions. Checking whether CBD's promise holds up, and what else sits behind it, is exactly the kind of comparison this site exists to do.

This review is built around three questions: what the card range looks like, whether the free-for-life promise is substantive, and what the rewards actually deliver at a realistic spend level. The eligibility bar and the question of who each card suits round it out.

What's in CBD's card range?

CBD's credit card range spans entry-level through to premium travel-focused products. At the entry level sits the One card, the bank's highest-volume product and the one most frequently searched. At the premium end, CBD issues cards on Visa Infinite and Mastercard World tiers, which carry travel benefits including lounge access, travel insurance and higher earn rates on spend. Between them sit mid-tier cards with features that sit closer to entry-level than to premium.

Each card tier carries a different minimum salary requirement, a different fee structure and different rewards mechanics. The product that earns the most visibility in search, the One card, is also the product with the most modest reward structure, because it earns that visibility from the no-annual-fee promise rather than from reward generosity. Understanding this distinction matters: the One card is not the best-rewarding CBD card, it is the most accessible one.

The full current lineup, including card names, salary requirements and annual fees, is listed at cbd.ae. Verify the current range there rather than relying on any third-party summary, including this one, because product ranges at UAE banks change regularly.

Is the One card genuinely free for life?

Free for life, as a product name feature, implies no annual membership fee at any point in the card's life, regardless of how much or how little the cardholder spends. This is a stronger commitment than "fee waived on annual spend above X", which is a condition. It is also stronger than a first-year fee waiver, which is a promotion.

The One card is marketed as free for life without a spend condition. If CBD's current schedule of charges confirms this, it means the annual membership fee is zero regardless of activity. That is worth something, particularly for cardholders whose spending patterns are irregular or who want a backup card without the risk of a dormancy fee triggering.

Free for life does not mean free of all charges. The schedule of charges will include at minimum: a foreign currency transaction fee on purchases made in currencies other than AED; a late payment fee if the minimum payment is missed; a cash advance fee for ATM withdrawals; and potentially a returned payment fee. These are standard across the UAE market and applying to a free-for-life card does not contradict the no-annual-fee promise. They are incurred only through specific cardholder behaviours, not automatically.

There is one further risk to watch. UAE banks reserve the right to change product terms, and a card sold as free for life today can see its terms amended through a product update. The bank is required to notify cardholders before changing material terms, and cardholders have the right to close the account before the change takes effect. If the free-for-life commitment is important to you, note the current terms at the time of application and watch for any amendment notices from CBD.

What do the rewards pay after conditions?

The One card earns rewards on eligible purchases, credited as points redeemable through CBD's rewards programme. The headline earn rate sets the starting point. Two factors then reduce the effective return: monthly or annual earn caps, and the redemption value of the points.

A cap limits total points earnings in a period. Once the cap is reached, additional spending earns at a lower base rate or no reward at all until the next cycle. For a low-to-moderate spender the cap may never bind, making the headline rate the effective rate. For a higher spender it can bind quickly, especially on a card positioned at the entry level where caps tend to be set conservatively.

The redemption value is the other variable. Points worth 0.5 fils per point at statement credit redemption are worth far less than the same points at, say, 1 fil per point on travel bookings through the bank's portal. The headline earn rate on the card is only meaningful once you know what those points are worth in the redemption channel you would actually use. Check CBD's current points-to-value table directly.

How to calculate the One card's net annual return

Once you have the verified earn rate and redemption value from CBD, run this:

1. Estimate your monthly eligible spend on the card.

2. Apply the earn rate to get monthly points earned, then check whether it exceeds the monthly cap. Use the capped figure if it does.

3. Multiply monthly points earned by the redemption value in AED.

4. Multiply by 12 for an annual figure.

5. Since the annual fee is zero, the annual return from step 4 is your net reward with no deduction for the fee. Compare this against a card that earns more but charges a fee: net reward on the fee card minus its annual fee versus the One card's net reward. Our rewards matcher does this calculation once the CBD card data is verified in our system.

What are the eligibility rules?

CBD credit card eligibility follows the standard UAE framework: a minimum monthly salary requirement, UAE residency, a valid Emirates ID, and proof of income. Entry-level cards in the UAE typically start at a minimum salary in the range of AED 5,000 to AED 8,000 per month; the One card sits at the more accessible end of that range.

CBD accepts applications from both salaried and self-employed residents. Self-employed applicants typically face a higher documentation requirement, often including trade licence copies, recent bank statements and audited financials where available. The assessment is the same as for any UAE bank: creditworthiness based on income stability and existing liabilities.

Credit limit setting is at CBD's discretion, subject to CBUAE regulations that cap total personal credit exposure. A cardholder approved for the One card can expect a starting limit linked to their monthly income, with scope to request increases after establishing a payment history with the bank. The credit bureau check is standard, and any existing defaults or missed payments at other UAE institutions will affect the outcome.

For the premium cards in CBD's range, the minimum salary bar is higher, often AED 15,000 or above, and the documentation for self-employed applicants is more rigorous. The premium tier earns more on travel and international spend, carries lounge benefits and offers travel insurance. Those benefits only justify a higher minimum salary threshold if the cardholder actually uses them; a high-salary applicant who does not travel frequently will see more value from a mid-tier card with stronger everyday cashback.

Who does each card suit?

The One card has a clear profile: it suits someone who wants a credit card without the commitment of an annual fee, is building a credit history in the UAE, or wants a secondary card for specific categories without adding a recurring cost. It is the strongest case for a first card in Dubai among the mid-sized UAE banks precisely because the free-for-life promise removes the annual fee as a variable from the decision. The reward earnings are modest, but so is the cost.

It is less suited to high-spenders who want the best cashback or points on large monthly spend. At high spend levels, the earn cap constrains the return, and the absence of a fee stops being the main advantage. At that level, the comparison should be between the One card's net reward and the net reward of a higher-earning card whose fee is justified by the additional return. Our ten-minute comparison method gives the framework for running that calculation.

The premium CBD cards suit higher earners who travel regularly and want lounge access, travel insurance and a higher earn rate on international spend. For a cardholder who takes three or four flights a year and values the lounge benefit, the premium card's annual fee can be offset by the benefit value alone, before rewards are counted. The test is simple: value the benefits you would actually use in a year and compare that to the annual fee. If the benefits exceed the fee, the card earns its keep regardless of the reward rate.

CBD offers a range spanning entry-level through to premium Visa Infinite and Mastercard World tier products. The One card is the flagship entry-level offer, marketed as free for life. Premium cards carry travel benefits including lounge access and travel insurance. Verify the full current lineup at cbd.ae.

Is the CBD One card genuinely free for life?

Free for life means no annual membership fee and no spend condition to waive it. The One card is marketed on this basis. Other charges still apply: FX markup, late payment fee and cash advance fee. Confirm the current schedule of charges at cbd.ae before applying.

What do the CBD One card rewards actually pay after conditions?

The earn rate per AED spent, the monthly cap on earnings, and the points redemption value together determine actual return. These figures require verification from CBD's current rewards terms at cbd.ae. Once verified, use the worked-example formula in this article to calculate your net annual return.

Which UAE banks quietly add fees to their credit cards after the first year?

UAE banks can amend product terms with notice, including introducing or increasing fees. The safest approach is to read the schedule of charges at application and watch for amendment notices. Free-for-life cards carry a stronger implicit commitment, but always read the T&Cs regardless.

What is the minimum salary to get a CBD credit card?

CBD sets minimum salary requirements by card tier. Entry-level cards are accessible to lower salary bands; premium cards require higher income. Verify the current minimum salary for the specific card you are considering directly from cbd.ae or the application page.

Who does each CBD credit card suit?

The One card suits first-time applicants and those who want a no-fee card for building credit history or secondary use. Premium CBD cards suit higher earners who travel regularly and would use lounge access and travel insurance. Match the card to your spending profile and verify current terms before applying.
